Grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup
a fave on a bitter cold winters day,
frozen into the house we would all troop,
coats, boots and scarves would all be put away.
Then mom wold serve us big steaming bowls
into the soup we would dip the grilled cheese,
a sure fire cure for the winter drolls,
hey mom, can we have another bowl, please?
The soup would warm us from the inside out
soup and grilled cheese was manna from heaven,
we knew this was what love was all about,
at least when your nine, eight and seven.
On cold winter days at age thirty three,
it's tomato soup and grilled cheese for me.

To order, send a self-addressed stamped envelope with a brief letter listing the desired date of taping and three alternate dates. You can request up to four tickets, but seating is limited. Greens - Vegetarian with a Spectacular View

On each visit, you and your guests will enjoy Chef Annie Somerville's daily menu, which draws from a repertoire that has made Greens one of the premiere vegetarian restaurants in the country. From our airy, art-filled dining room, with floor to ceiling windows you are treated to sweeping views of the Marina, the Golden Gate Bridge and the Marin headlands. Greens Restaurant is located in a converted warehouse at historic Fort Mason, which currently is home to more than 50 non-profit cultural and environmental organizations. We opened in 1979 under the auspices of the San Francisco Zen Center. Built by San Francisco Zen Center carpenters, the restaurant incorporates 12 types of wood - from the massive black walnut doors, the hickory stairs at our entrance, the curved bar featuring Port-Orford-Cedar, and the dining tables of maple, walnut and cherry. Much of the wood has been recycled or reclaimed. Greens Restaurant was a pioneer in establishing vegetarian cuisine in the United States. In the 60's and 70's, vegetarian restaurants were mostly small out-of-the way cafés. There was no high profile vegetarian restaurant in the United States. Greens changed that by raising the bar, by placing vegetarian cuisine on a level with other fine dining restaurants. We have been reviewed by food and design magazines from the time we opened. Today we are surprised if a good restaurant does NOT have vegetarian options. Greens helped pave the way for this acceptance.

Get Starstruck at the Watercourt

Grand Performances summer series takes place on two stages at California Plaza the Watercourt stage and the Marina Pavilion. The larger of the two venues - the Watercourt stage - is a unique performance site that can hold as many as 70 performers and is partially surrounded by a system of gardens and water features. The capacity crowd for this stage can be as large as 6,500 people. The smaller Marina Pavilion stage has an amphitheatre style feel and can accommodate close to 300 audience members. This unique outdoor venue is the only one of its kind in Southern California. Excerpt from Atlanta Constitution/Atlanta Journal appearing Sunday, May 18, 1997 READER POSTCARD: Up, up and away to thrills in the air over the Napa Valley A thrilling hot air balloon ride enhanced Atlantan Kay McCall's trip to Northern California. It still takes my breath away just thinking about peering over the side of a hot air balloon basket while high in the sky. I finally realized this experience of a lifetime on a recent visit to the San Francisco Bay area. I booked the ride with Above the West Hot Air Ballooning for four of us, including my elderly aunt and uncle. Leaving our San Francisco hotel at 4:45 a.m., we were driven to Yountville in the Napa Valley for pastries and coffee at 6. As the day dawned beautiful and clear, we met our ace pilot, Donna Dunrud. We Watched the crew inflate our hot air balloon, the Tivoli. What a thrill to see that huge pink and blue sphere come to life. We climbed into the basket and in no time were inches off the ground and slowly, gently gaining altitude to 3,500 feet. the vineyards and wineries below began to look like a model railroad set. Propane tank blasts—and our oohs and ahhs—punctuated the serene quiet. We zoomed low over a range of hills, watching a hawk dive for his breakfast, a deer dashing across a field. And we gasped as the other side of the crest dropped away below us. As we approached the bay, we descended into a hayfield. I was worried, having heard about baskets tipping over on landing. But the ground crew grasped the basket and we felt an easy bounce. We received certificates, hot air balloon-shaped pins and a champagne breakfast, a fine way to cap the trip. Fly Through the Air
For the first timer, the Parachute Center offers an Introductory Jump for $100.00. The Introductory Jump will give you an overall look at the sport. It includes all equipment, training, plane ride, and a freefall jump with a specially trained Instructor. The jump is from 13,000 feet and will give you 60 seconds of freefall (approximately two miles), and a five minute descent under a specially designed parachute. Weight is an important factor on the tandem jump. If you weigh over 200 pounds, there is a service charge of $1.00 per pound for every pound over 200. If you are 215 pounds and under, you will still go to the top altitude, if you are over 215 pounds, the jump is from 6,000 feet with a shorter freefall time, but you will still have a five minute descent under the parachute. The Introductory Jump will introduce you to the sport in the safest possible environment under the direct supervision of your Instructor. NO RESERVATIONS are necessary for The Introductory Jump. We are OPEN EVERYDAY at 9 a.m., we ask you to be here by 3 p.m. during the week and by 4 p.m. on the weekends. We do jump later but set these times to allow us adequate time for the training and the jump. Wear loose fitting, comfortable clothes and tennis shoes. You must be 18 years of age to begin Skydiving. Feel the celebrity handprints at Mann's Chinese Theatre.

It was once stated that “to visit Los Angeles and not see the Chinese is like visiting China and not seeing the Great Wall.” Grauman’s opulent, awe-inspiring presence and history has been a cornerstone of Hollywood for over 75 years. The grand opening of Grauman's Chinese Theatre in Hollywood on May 18, 1927, was the most spectacular theatre opening in motion picture history. Thousands of people lined Hollywood Boulevard and a riot broke out as fans tried to catch a glimpse of the movie stars and other celebrities as they arrived for the opening. The film being premiered that night was Cecil B. DeMille's “The King of Kings,” which was preceded by "Glories of the Scriptures," a live prologue devised by master showman Sid Grauman. A Wurlitzer organ and 65-piece orchestra provided music for the prologue. The theatre opened to the public the following day, May 19, 1927. Previously, Grauman built the Million Dollar Theatre in downtown Los Angeles and the lavish Egyptian Theatre a few blocks from the Chinese, but he wanted to build his dream theatre. Real estate mogul C.E. Toberman helped him secure a long-term lease on a piece of property on the boulevard and Grauman developed the plans for the theatre with architect Raymond Kennedy. Norma Talmadge turned the first spade full of dirt in January 1926 and beautiful Chinese actress Anna May Wong drove the first rivet in the steel girders. Built at a cost of $2,000,000, eighteen months later the Chinese Theatre opened. Authorization had to be obtained from the U.S. government to import temple bells, pagodas, stone Heaven Dogs and other artifacts from China. Poet and film director Moon Quon came from China, and under his supervision Chinese artisans created many pieces of statuary in the work area that eventually became the Forecourt of the Stars. Most of these pieces still decorate the ornate interior of the theatre today. April 30, 1927: Practicing for the very first footprint ceremony, Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks, and Sid Grauman (kneeling) later placed individual prints in two separate squares. Protected by it’s 40-foot high curved walls and copper-topped turrets, the theatre’s legendary forecourt serves as an oasis to the stars of yesterday and today. Ten-foot tall lotus-shaped fountains and intricate artistry flank the footprints of some of Hollywood’s most elite and welcome its visitors into the magical world of fantasy and whim known as Hollywood. The theatre rises 90-feet high and two gigantic coral red columns topped by wrought iron masks hold aloft the bronze roof. Between the columns is a 30-foot high dragon carved from stone. Guarding the theatre entrance to this day are the two original giant Heaven Dogs brought from China. Grauman never owned the theatre outright, but held a one-third interest with his partners, Howard Schenck, Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks, Sr. Grauman sold his share to Fox West Coast Theatres in 1929 and was the Managing Director of the theatre until his death in 1950. Grauman’s Chinese Theatre is the most sought-after theatre in Hollywood for studio premieres. Fans flock to these events to see the celebrities arrive and walk up the red carpet into the theatre. Rich in movie tradition, with its cement handprints and footprints in the forecourt, the Chinese Theatre immortalizes the brightest stars. More than four-million visitors from all over the world visit Grauman’s every year. The Grauman’s Chinese Theatre was declared a historic-cultural landmark in 1968, and there has always been a restoration program in process to maintain the theatre's beauty. Following the 1994 Los Angeles earthquake, geological experts were brought in to inspect the theatre and advise the owners with regard to protecting and strengthening the entire structure. The theatre has undergone a major renovation. Timed to coincide with the opening of the Hollywood & Highland mall and the new Mann Chinese 6 Theatre, the renovation is designed to rejuvenate and enhance the Chinese Theatre. Additionally, several earthquake retrofits were required to protect the structure and ensure its permanence. Stay awake at the Buena Vista

THE IRISH COFFEE STORY The historic venture started on the night of November the 10th in 1952. Jack Koeppler, then-owner of the Buena Vista, challenged international travel writer Stanton Delaplane to help re-create a highly touted "Irish Coffee" served at Shannon Airport in Ireland. Intrigued, Stan Accepted Jack’s invitation, and the pair began to experiment immediately. Throughout the night the two of them stirred and sipped judiciously and eventually acknowledged two recurring problems. The taste was "not quite right," and the cream would not float. Stan’s hopes sank like the cream, but Jack was undaunted. The restaurateur pursued the elusive elixir with religious fervor, even making a pilgrimage overseas to Shannon Airport. Upon Jack’s return, the experimentation continued. Finally, the perfect-tasting Irish whiskey was selected. Then the problem of the bottom-bent cream was taken to San Francisco’s mayor, a prominent dairy owner. It was discovered that when the cream was aged for 48 hours and frothed to a precise consistency, it would float as delicately as a swan on the surface of Jack’s and Stan’s special nectar. Success was theirs! With the recipe now mastered, a sparkling clear, six-ounce, heat-treated goblet was chosen as a suitable chalice. Soon the fame of the Buena Vista’s Irish Coffee spread throughout the land. Today, it’s still the same delicious mixture, and it’s still the same clamorous, cosmopolitan Buena Vista. Both…delightful experiences.

Cross the border at the Cal-Neva Lodge where Frank used to hang out, win a big jackpot, bring the money back to California to spend it.

The Cal Neva survived many owners during the early years, but none were as famous or visible as Frank Sinatra who purchased the Cal Neva and was licensed on September 10, 1960. He did extensive remodeling, and the Celebrity Showroom was built on the Nevada side with a helicopter pad on top of it. The helicopter pad was used only while Sinatra owned the Cal Neva Lodge. The Cal Neva Lodge filled to capacity during the summer months when Frank Sinatra owned and operated it. He booked big name entertainers for the Indian Room and for the Celebrity Showroom. A controversy with the Nevada Gaming Control Board resulted in the revocation of Sinatra's license on October 22, 1963. On Labor Day, September 1963 Frank Sinatra closed the Cal Neva Lodge bringing and end to a reign that was as colorful as himself.

Candles glimmer at each of the window side tables arranged in the cozy wood paneled dining room. In the summer, tables are set up outside. Wherever you sit, be adventurous: the Italian menu features items such as Eggplant Crepes served with sun-dried tomatoes with sherry wine sauce, among other unusual selections. Desserts are out-of-this-world, especially the homemade white chocolate ice cream. We were tempted to stay an extra day in South Lake Tahoe just to come back here..." Pierleoni 1996 Assistant Features Editor A short drive from Casino Row, on the California side, is the Cafe Fiore, a seven-table restaurant that has lived many lives over the years, including one as a private residence. Luckily for us, Nick Ashmore has had the place for the past year and a half. Between him and young (26) self-taught chef Gilbert Ruelas, the restaurant has never been stronger or more versatile. (The sauces really stand out; they're not timid about making a statement.) The high ceilings and overhead fan give the small room at least a sense of spaciousness (there's summertime alfresco dining that doubles the seating). It is rather ironic that conversant diners enjoy more a sense of privacy here than in many larger dining rooms. Cafe Fiore has the world's second-best garlic bread, based on the theory that there likely is a better one elsewhere in the world -- though we haven't found it. The house-specialty appetizer is eggplant crepes, four thinly sliced eggplant rounds stuffed with smoked salmon, grilled and served in a sherry cream and sun-dried tomato sauce. Luscious. Another winner was the grilled tiger prawns with pancetta, served with a fresh fruit compote. The menu has some hearty pasta dishes -- linguine with seafood sautéed in a cognac, caper and lemon butter sauce; fettuccine tossed with garlic, artichoke hearts, broccoli, olives, pinenuts and tomatoes in a white wine sauce -- and a lineup of imaginative dinners starring chicken, pork tenderloin, filet mignon and veal. But it was two specials that grabbed our attention the other night: grilled lamb chops with shiitake mushrooms and pine nuts in a Madera wine reduction sauce; and tender ahi with crushed black peppercorns, seared in olive oil and finished with garlic butter sauce. The chops and the fish were some of the best we've tasted anywhere. The house-made white chocolate ice cream with sliced strawberries ended things nicely. Recent winners have included Basil and Garlic-Stuffed Sea Scallops wrapped in Prosciutto and served with a Spicy Citrus Beurre Blanc and Garlic Seafood Soup The most delicious-sounding recipes, approximately 50, are forwarded to a professional food consultant who makes the final selection of the eight recipes. The consultant prepares each recipe to ensure correct measurements and use of ingredients. These finalists' recipes are those considered to make the most interesting and exciting contest. The finalists come to Gilroy to prepare their recipes on the Saturday of the festival in front of the public. By 12:15, celebrity judges pick their favorites. The winner of the Great Garlic Cook-Off is appropriately honored with a crown of garlic and goes home $1,000 richer. Second place is awarded $750; third, $500. My favorite fancy restaurant in San Francisco is Farallon, where my pals Stacey and Susan took me a few years back for a birthday celebration.

From a San Francisco Chronicle review, Farallon, the newest big-ticket affair near Union Square, has just about everything a restaurant needs to be great. The interior, a $4 million extravaganza designed by Pat Kuleto, exudes a magical, feel-good air. The food by Mark Franz, who was the backbone of the Stars kitchen for a decade, is already some of the best in the city. Franz focuses on seafood, creating innovative and imaginative combinations. For example, he uses Napa cabbage leaves to bundle together prawn mousse with wild salmon fillets and striped bass. He steams the package, cuts it open to expose the mosaic pattern inside, and places it on a bed of tiny diced, gingered vegetables and an unctuous foie gras sauce.

Visit the oldest McDonald's in Downey

This site is the oldest in the worldwide chain of 20,000 restaurants and the last one with red-and-white striped tile exterior. After opening in 1953, it immediately become the standard for the fast food franchises across the country. The building and its 60 foot high neon sign with "Speedee the Chef" are eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places. Employees wear 50's style uniforms of paper hats, white shirts and bolo ties. The restaurant serves the original menu of hamburgers, cheeseburgers, fries and old fashioned milkshakes. Also available are more recent McDonald's items such as Big Macs and Happy Meals. McDonald's reopened the facility as it was with walkup windows and outdoor seating. They also constructed and addition housing a museum, gift shop, restrooms and more outdoor seating.

The Pasadena Playhouse makes an indelible mark on American theatre, presenting world premieres, sending productions to Broadway as well as major theatres throughout the country. Today, the theatre produces a year-round six-play season of 275 performances featuring over 100 artists, designers, directors and playwrights. More than 130,000 patrons visit each year, including over 12,000 subscribers who travel from 400 zip codes. The Pasadena Playhouse attracts a diverse audience by consistently presenting plays with themes that are relevant to the entire community.
Our History Taken from the video 80 Years in 8 Minutes: Pasadena Playhouse 1925-2005 It all begins with Gilmor Brown. By all accounts, Gilmor Brown is not a great actor. He is an ordinary actor with boyish good looks - who forgets his lines at least once every performance. He is not a great director, either; he’s good, but not great. But he is charming and witty and he has a rare and wonderful gift...he’s a visionary! In 1916 he turns 30 years old. Gilmor step off a Santa Fe train in a very warm Pasadena. By warm, we do not mean the welcome, either. It is August, there is no air conditioning and everyone is overdressed. Gilmor finds a building, an old burlesque house on North Fair Oaks; he names it the Savoy and sets about producing a season of plays. Everyone in town is invited to try out for productions. The theatre’s slogan is, “The hero may be your grocer!” There are audience sing-alongs at Intermission and on Election Night the voting results are announced throughout the evening. By the end of the first year, the Savoy Players have presented 63 productions. In May of 1925, a beautiful new theater, one of the first in southern California, is unveiled on South El Molino Avenue. Opening night is a magical evening, full of lights, and the scent of jasmine, celebrities, memories and, most of all, promise. Hanging wrought iron lamps softly illuminate the cool evening. Champagne did not flow from crystal glasses, because of that pesky Prohibition, but architect Elmer Grey’s jewel of a building takes center stage. By all accounts the new theatre is a tremendous success. The New York drama critic writes, “Pasadena has reason to be proud of its great civic organization, and of the directors and managers who have made this little theatre into one of the foremost in the English-speaking world.” British poet and playwright John Drinkwater remarks: “If you ever let an achievement like this slip through your fingers, you ought to move to some uncivilized place.” Gilmor has a vision. In 1928 he opens a theatre school drawing students from all over the world. In the 1930s the Playhouse becomes a showcase for Hollywood. As talkies replace silent films, studio actors flock to the Playhouse to learn how to actually speak. Randolph Scott’s Southern drawl distresses Gilmor so, he finally tells Randy to “go back to Virginia and raise horses.” Soon Hollywood itself becomes a regular audience presence, hoping to discover the next big film stars. In 1937 the state legislature designates the Playhouse as the official state theatre for bringing national and international renowned to California as a center for the theatrical arts. However, Sacramento does not actually fund the theatre but leaves that responsibility to the patrons. Throughout the 1940s, despite wartime curfews and blackouts, the school continues to thrive and produce some marvelous actors like Robert Preston, William Holden, Raymond Burr, Eve Arden, Gig Young, Charles Bronson, and Rue McLanahan. After the war, the GI bill brings a great influx of students to the school and the Playhouse complex buzzes with activity in playwriting, directing, fencing, voice, acting, scenic design and dance classes. Gilmor recognizes television as the next big thing and opens a tv studio at the Playhouse which trains directors, actors, writers, and technicians for this new medium. Disneyland, drive-in movies, Barbie dolls, gray flannel suits and poodle skirts mark the look and feel of the 1950s. At the Playhouse the productions range from Herman Wouk’s The Traitor, Tennessee Williams’s Summer and Smoke, and Garson Kanin’s Born Yesterday, to Billy Budd by Herman Melville, The Gondoliers by Gilbert & Sullivan, Picnic by William Inge, Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet starring Margaret O’Brian and John Barrymore, Jr. But Gilmor’s health is beginning to fail. He no longer strides all over the complex with a police whistle around his neck. In 1960 he lies down for a nap after lunch in Palm Springs and never wakes up again. Unfortunately he leaves without a successor in place. In Pasadena the glory days of the school begins to fade. Universities across the country open theatre departments and the competition is stiff. The Playhouse still attracts tremendous talent in such artists as Dustin Hoffman, Gene Hackman and Elaine May but by 1969 the school succumbs to its financial burden and soon after, the theatre closes her heavy wooden doors. During the 1970s the Playhouse is threatened with demolition and remains dark but many community leaders continue to work tirelessly to revive the theatre. They successfully receive a designation on the National Register of Historic Places that saves the building from the wrecking ball. In 1979 the City of Pasadena steps in to help a local developer reopen the Playhouse. It takes a long time to rebuild and reconstruct the beauty of this treasured building after years of abandonment and neglect. 1986 marks the return of both Haley’s Comet -- and the Pasadena Playhouse. A team of strong artistic leaders in Susan Dietz and Steve Rothman make the boards come alive again with laughter and tears in productions presenting Rebecca De Mornay in Born Yesterday, Barbara Rush in Steel Magnolias, Gregory Harrison and Marilu Henner in Carnal Knowledge, Lea Thompson in Bus Stop, and Brian Stokes Mitchell from Mail. The 1990s hail the advent of the Internet, a booming economy, and as Bruce Springsteen sings about television, “there’s 500 channels and nothing to watch.” By the end of this decade the Playhouse introduces a new artistic director in Sheldon Epps who brings his unique vision to this great theatre. During the next eight years every season brims with productions by award winning writers such as Tom Stoppard, Neil Simon, Alan Ayckbourn, Christopher Hampton, Stephen Sondheim, David Hare, and Pulitzer Prize winners Nilo Cruz and John Patrick Shanley. The excitement is palpable as the dressing rooms buzz with the electric dramatic and comedic talent of artists like Linda Hunt, Hal Holbrook, Phylicia Rashad, Harry Groener, Carol Lawrence, Stacey Keach, Stephanie Zimbalist, Robert Picardo, JoAnne Worley, Conrad Bain, Mare Winningham, Bea Arthur, Paul Dooley, CCH Pounder, Brooke Adams, Shirley Knight, Diahann Carroll and Jonathan Cake among many many others. Today the vision for the Playhouse continues Gilmor Brown’s vision of 80 years ago: to be a center for the theatrical arts in southern California. In addition to the season productions there is something going on at the Playhouse in every available space and on any given day: student matinees, labs for new plays, programs for children, youth and families, auditions, rehearsals, tours, set construction, and maintenance, maintenance, and more maintenance. In 2004 the Balcony theatre at the Playhouse reopens and features the Furious Theatre Company, and a reading series called “Hothouse at the Playhouse” for the development of new work from diverse and emerging playwrights. Now, the Playhouse board and staff are announcing a major fundraising effort called the “Next Stage Campaign.” This campaign advances a vibrant vision for the future through restoration of this historic theatre, modernization of the Balcony theatre, expansion of the outreach and education programs, and creation of an endowment. As the building hums with activity, and as the community continues to support this cultural gem, there is still much work to be done, more money to raise, more renovation, more restoration, more programs, and most importantly, more stories to tell.
